The start of politically motivated demonetization was 2013. I think my channel was one of the first targeted because of my political reporting. I have made many videos about these problems and was making videos about these kinds of problems YEARS AGO.*

I have been looking at YouTube's demonetization practice for years, and it is clear that demonetization has been used as a way to financially hinder and marginalize political content on YouTube. The very first video I had demonetized was "Debunking Boston Police Commissioner's Word for Boston Bombing Suspects as evidence of conspiracy" Published on Apr 23, 2013 and demonetized on Apr 23, 2013 or the next day. I posted about this problem in YouTube forums back in 2013 and heard back from Peggy in 2013 that YouTUbe removed monetization from my video because of the topic! I continued to complain about this practice, here I am again complaining about it in several posts in this forum: productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/monetization-on-youtube/wFnRbD37ah0
* And contrary to the notion that the push for this practice came from advertisers, I saw how demonetization started by a push from some irate viewers. Specifically, it looks like the conspiracy nuts about the Boston bombing pissed off some viewers and those viewers got it in their heads that it would be a good idea to demand that videos claiming that the Boston bombing was fake should not be allowed to have ads! (This is what I gather from my research of some people making video complaints to Youtube. BTW, from what I can tell, the first video demonetized on my channel was about how the Boston bombing conspiracies were wrong! see www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH5If6JYj3w&list=PLfrlsC1yJ2dSnKIHBJrnrPKrK9bOtV-A3 that one then the next three )
From there it looks like YouTube expanded it as a way to financially disincentive content creators from making videos saying things that some don't want said. The policy change is a setback, I do hope we can turn it around. I made this petition that I still think is worth signing in addition to all the efforts of the union: (The petition highlights how YouTube's claims don't hold water) www.change.org/p/larry-page-cofounder-google-susan-wojcicki-ceo-of-youtube-eric-e-schmidt-executive-chairman-google-sergey-brin-co-founder-of-google-sridhar-ramaswamy-senior-vice-president-ads-commerce-youtube-please-restore-ad-revenue-for-journalists-reporting-on-wa?recruiter=393335316&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink
