The survey was/is a great success. By now almost 1700 users and 185 creators participated. This is HIGHLY relevant as the sample size is so big that there is not a shadow of a doubt - the subscription system is totally broken or tampered with, and so is the trending/recommended system. The income of the creators is down on average, and very significantly so. Now YouTube may say that this is a bug. Since they offer different platforms (PC, iOS and Android), we need to know if this is universal or limited to certain platforms only. So this small additional survey is for everyone who DID experience NOT being notified about uploads by channels he subscribed to WITH the bell activated. Thanks! So: How did you use YouTube when you missed an upload by a channel you have subscribed WITH bell active?
Was asked today by a journalist if I think there is a connection between the adpocalypse and the terrible San Bruno shooting.
Here is my answer.
Of course there is a connection between the shooting and the demonetization. YouTube made plenty of enemies with their unfair and sudden change of general policy. Simply to make more money, they not only threatened the existence of long term partners but also shattered the dreams of many people who put their hopes into a new career as a YouTube creator.
YouTube gave plenty of outsiders a taste of fame and success. Then they took it away again, just like that, and refused to even talk to the affected people. This was incredibly harsh, lacks empathy and responsibility. I mean, we are talking about human beings that are thrown into psychological turmoil. YouTube did not care about that. All they cared about was the requests from the advertisers. It was THIS element that made me adding the remonetization of smaller channels to the list of demands. Not the money is important (small channels made almost none beforehand). The hope is what these people lost. They felt kicked out and left alone. They still do.
If you do all this to many thousands of people, chances are some of these enemies you just made are mentally disturbed and may snap. I believe that is exactly what happened here. I saw videos by the shooter where she complained bitterly about YouTube's unfair behavior, and her website confirms this. Chances are she had mental issues before, but in any case YouTube needs to be aware of their social responsibilities towards creators. Many of us creators are depending on YouTube - not only financially but also emotionally.
I believe that the Union gives YouTube a chance to change things for the better. We give some kind of hope and assistance to those that are deeply traumatized by the unfair treatment. If YouTube keeps working with us, we will not only try to make YouTube a better place for everyone, but also we may reduce the likelihood for more tragic events like the San Bruno shooting.
Coming back to the survey, in light of this shooting I believe it is extremely interesting to find out if YouTube REALLY "filtered out" videos that they previously demonetized - that was what the perpetrator of the atrocious shooting claimed on her website. The survey results indicate that this is indeed the truth.
I will now forward the results of our survey to YouTube, confronting them with the clear results.
- 48.8% of the users are unhappy with the upload notification system - 60% of the users report missing notifications even for "bell" subscriptions - 44.2% of the users have been desubbed from channels - 75% of the creators have experienced demonetization - 40% of the creators experience "filtering" even for monetized videos - 71.2% of the creators think that people are being desubbed
This is a scandal. Fraud, really. YouTube promises that people will get notifications for every upload to "bell" subscriptions, but they don't do that. Instead they bombard people with notifications for MONETIZED videos. They press unwanted content upon faithful users and hide wanted content from them at the same time.
I demand clear statements and explanations from YouTube. And I won't accept the "probably a bug" excuse.
Our additional poll clearly showed that this is NOT a platform related bug. The effect spreads over devices (desktop, Android, iOS) pretty much EXACTLY in parallel to the factual usage (50/50 desktop vs. mobile, 20/80 iOS vs. Android).
Some members expressed concern about the relevance of our sample size. Science says otherwise. Our sample sizes are SO high that our results are totally relevant. You can check this here: www.surveysystem.com/sscalc.htm
Even if we go for the highest possible confidence level, with our roughly 1850 data sets we have achieved a confidence interval of 3. Means, +/- 3 % precision is 99% sure. Hard to beat. People without education in statistics often believe that large populations require much bigger sample sizes, however that is not so. Sounds like magic, but is applied mathematics.
"We have been working with experts from our Partner Operations team who typically handle the technical, product and policy questions you have raised. They will be responding directly in the next couple of days and in fact we feel it would be easiest and most appropriate for you to liaise with them directly from now on. Your current Partner Manager will be moving on to other responsibilities."
This means I am a 1.9 million subs creator without a partner manager now.
But it is true, I much prefer talking to the big dogs directly.
So I am now waiting for them to "respond directly", for whatever that means.
Dear experts, show us your features please. And right soon. We are notoriously impatient.

0:59-1.02 Joerg you mind using the blur tool(in the video manager settings please) against the WA name in that image as I'm going to change it & I fear YT many actually target wrestling users if it isn't done.
So I got "contacted" regarding my request to speak to more "experts". But all I got was a message from "Creator Support", of course giving me the very same text YouTube uses as standard. They say I need to put my questions as comments under the "Creators Inside" videos so they can answer them in "future updates". See my answer below.
Sorry YouTube, not good enough.
I hate to say it, but we may need to start the serious fights. I will ask for negotiations one more time, then I will call you guys to arms.
We have conducted highly representative surveys that clearly show that there IS a connection between "trending" and "monetization". Further, the survey results clearly show that the subscription notification system is either tampered with or flawed. Of course I saw the videos you are relating to, but the statement in those videos was clear: If you have activated the "bell", then you WILL get notifications. Our survey clearly shows that this is NOT the case.
I would like to speak to someone higher up in your organization in order to discuss these serious issues. In terms of monetization, I recently had a VC with your Global Head of Monetization and I am now waiting for the results of that conversation. But the gentleman was unable to speak about the other issues I would like to address.
Also we need to discuss the community guidelines, including those for firearms as we feel they need to be changed, for the benefit of all related parties.
Please pass on the fact that if YouTube won't enter into negotiations with us, we WILL start to take the usual actions available to unions in such scenarios. The global media is already following our movement closely and will no doubts boost our efforts.
Please note that this isn't personal and we are also not enemies. The YouTubers Union has the goal to make YouTube a better platform, TOGETHER with YouTube and by means of discussions and dialog. We feel that several things at YouTube are broken and in need of fixing. We are offering our help in this regard.
Had a disturbing comment under one of my videos yesterday. Someone says YouTube is doing a survey related to my videos specifically. I wonder why they are doing that. Anyone else ever experienced that? Here is the comment (translated from German): ------------------------------------------------------ Hey Jörg, this could be interesting because of the YouTubers Union: I have the google-survey-app and had some questions about my youtube account and what I'm looking at on Wednesday. Not a big deal but for the questions just related to your channel... I was asked if I have seen the Oreo slingshot, liked the Coke Bottle Warhead and so on. All rated "great", of course! I think google is looking for negative resonance to your channel to use it against you! Greetings from p****
Dear friends, no further reaction from YouTube. Therefore, we must get ready for our first serious move.
Here is what I have in mind: A two week campaign with a two week announcement period, so everybody can get ready and YT has (theoretically) time to yield before this starts.
For Creators: 1. Create an alternative account somewhere else. Vimeo, Facebook, Dailymotion, dTube, Full30 - I don't care. 2. In the two week period, upload at least ONE of your videos onto that platform 3. Put a non monetized teaser for that video with the link onto YouTube. Include the YouTubers Union into the teaser and ask people to join our fight. Ask your users to approach the other channels they are subscribed to. 4. Give us the link to your teaser(s) so we can publish them here and on the forum
For Users: 1. Try to watch as many videos that the creators uploaded elsewhere as you can. We will provide a list of participating videos. 2. Like the teasers and leave comments 3. Like the video (on the alternative platform) and leave a comment 4. Ask other channels you are subscribed to for joining our movement.
When will this start? I think the time frame from May 7 to May 20 would be cool. This gives me time to ramp up the press. They will love the fact that we are hitting YouTube where it hurts. People leaving the platform.
Asked "Creator Support" why YouTube is doing surveys about my videos. They basically came back with a white lie. Me: Hello, I got a comment under one of my videos that goes like this (translated from German): -------------------------------------------- Hey Jörg, this could be interesting because of the YouTubers Union: I have the google-survey-app and had some questions about my youtube account and what I'm looking at on Wednesday. I think google is looking for negative resonance to your channel to use it against you! Greetings from p**** -------------------------------------------- Are you in fact running surveys asking people how they feel about my videos? If so, why? Are you also doing that for other channels?
YouTube: Hi Jörg, Apologies for the delay. To begin with I'd like to inform you, Google/YouTube doesn't send this kind of surveys. To analyze the trend we already have YouTube Analytics which also includes Likes and Dislikes and Flagging on a video. If you wish you may report or block the user. Also, as this has come to you through a comment, we wouldn't be able to judge it's authenticity. Feel free to write back if there's anything else I may help you with.
David Mulgrew, who is "the man" behind our website, has introduced a membership card generator for us. Works great! I just have to add some of my social accounts to get those cool badges. Thanks David! youtubersunion.org/members-list
