Just some numbers that I have been plugging around to illustrate how a small fraction of a user base can make a huge difference.
Keep in mind that some of these numbers are out of date or unofficial.
YouTube annual costs- 6.5b annually YouTube ad revenue- 4b annually
Total YouTube users- 1.3-1.5b Total YouTube red users- 2m (ish) or about .12% of total user base.
According to polls internationally about 11% of users says that they would be willing to pay for no ads and premium content on YouTube.
If YouTube was to increase YouTube red memberships to 5% or a measly 65m users then YouTube could turn a profit without relying on ad revenue.
YouTube has a lot to gain by courting those 65m users.
Jörg alone has almost 2 million subscribers.
There is a time for the carrot and a time for the stick.
We may not have a big enough stick to turn the elephant, but a small carrot gets the same job done.
The point that I'm driving at is that YouTube is not evil they are a elephant looking for a carrot.
Right now advertisers are offering a pile of little carrot shavings. It's not great but it's the most obvious option.
If we want our platform back, we need to buy it back with a bigger, easier carrot, and YouTube has even provided a way to do it.
