I have been a creator on and off since YouTube first started. I've built and deleted channels more than once depending on my needs and goals. My videos are always for my family and friends, so I have no real stakes in this beyond being a consumer of other people's videos. But we the consumer have a large role to play too by providing the other point-of-view. So let me just say...
YouTube can be replaced. What was created once before can be re-created in a better image again, still monetized, and still allow advertisers to target their customers. And I would move to that new platform in a heartbeat if my favorite content creators moved too!!

As a customer of YouTube videos, I'm tired of being shown the same stupid advertisement in front of every video! I'm tired of being limited by only seeing thumbnails of videos I've already watched, already marked as 'not interested' or are so old they are no longer relevant. I'm tired of not being given the opportunity to see new content! I'm tired of being force-fed genres that have no bearing on my personal interests. I'm not a child, not a teenager, and am not interested in the latest vapid shinanigans of fools who's only seeming appeal is getting away with bad behavior. What i am is very frustrated and ready to leave!
Instead of relying on faulty bots and poorly written algorithms to guess what viewers want, create a new service that learns from fanfiction's "Archive Of Our Own" (AO3) example. Set up a catalog system that allows viewers to find the videos they WANT to see. When people find content they like quickly and easily, there will be no need to cave to advertiser pressure by playing the false favorites game via promoting links. The customer - we the viewers - will automatically find the material we want to watch, up-vote through subscriptions and 'likes', and click on the ads we find relevant. In addition to an excellent catalog filter function, allow a 5-star rating system that can also be used as a filter option. It would provide no more weight to how a video is found, but would allow people to choose based on their whims - do I want to see how bad this 1 star really is?
Video creators large AND small will benefit by no longer being buried by arbitrary rules. As long as video creators tag their videos properly, their content will be seen. Great videos by newcomers and established creators alike will be given equal chances of being viewed because it's up to the customer to use the filters to find the content they want. No more buried or hidden videos. Anything can be found and viewers can decide to watch based on a rating system that clearly marks the content types.
If money is an issue for developing and maintaining, crowd-source it! Obviously there are enough frustrated creators and customers alike that funding the build, servers, and staff wouldn't take very long. YouTube can be a thing of the past... like AOL and NetScape (yes, I'm showing my age). This Union is powerful and the right step. But if YouTube doesn't work with us, then drop them and do something new. YouTube is nothing without their creators and their advertisers will leave if there are no viewers. No reason to stick around in an abusive relationship.
