An alternative ad network?

Recently Dave Cullen from "Computing Forever" suggested an alternative ad platform that takes care of YouTube's demonetization problems.

While he is correct on most accounts in that video, his suggestion to start an alternative ad platform won't work. YouTube took care about that a long time ago. In the Terms of Service, they clearly point out that you may NOT sell ad space and insert ad videos by yourself without their prior consent.

Means, you can do sponsored videos as that is individual - but you can NOT throw in a Coca Cola ad.

I checked back with my partner manager (back when I still had one, they recently decided I am too much of a handful and kicked me out) and she clearly told me that this DOES apply to non monetized and even demonetized (lona) videos as well.

For sponsored videos, obviously such networks exist (the biggest one, Famebit, is even OWNED by google). But regular ads, not a chance, YouTube wants/has an exclusive on those.

So such a network would be limited to the so called "alternative platforms", that all aren't alternatives for larger channels as they simply lack the bandwidth and capacity.

The situation remains unchanged. We must form a massive movement or all is lost. Our only chance.

Not sure if you guys saw this... seems YouTube wants to get rid of proof that can be used to show that they are tampering with views, subs, trending, recommended and whatnot. I encourage you to go into analytics and save all the old data, because very soon it will be gone.

I don't like the smell of this new move. Not one bit.

I don't think we should put in any demands into the letter. We need to push them into negotiations, that is the sole purpose of the letter.

Have you guys seen that amazon now has a program for independent video creators? Seems like everyone can now put videos onto amazon video. Right next to the big shows!

You can chose if your video will be free and you only get your share of the ad money (just like YT), or if you want to charge people per view. Of course amazon will take a 50 to 55% cut.

That maybe the first real competition to YouTube. Amazon has the money and the capacity all the other platforms lack. It could be a game changer.

I think we should postpone the mailing action for a few days, David Mulgrew contacted the good people at mailaletter and asked for support. AFAIK they did not get back yet, but we should give them a bit of time. David believes it would be good to get some companies behind us, and I agree with him there. Won't be easy though, most of them are on the winning side of YT's new rules.
